Geierlay Suspension Bridge - Facts, Pros and Cons

It's December 16, 2023Hello Outdoor Lovers - Watch a video of my quick webstories to see what it’s like crossing the Geierlay bridge in Germany with a husky. I do not recommend it. He's an optimistic boy - he was pretty adamant about his chances of catching a bird 100 meters down and pulling hard against his nose leash toward the railing. And me, vertigo + fear of letting my sweet boy fall off a bridge was not the best combo ;-)

TL;DR: It’s 360 meters long, 100 meters high, open year round, dog friendly and free to cross. The only difficult part is parking in the summer. Plenty of hiking opportunities.

The Geierlay bridge truly is impressive from all angles both in an art and engineering perspective. It’s possible to walk across it in both directions, either from the village of Mörsdorf or Sosberg. There is a wooded gentle hiking trail between the two sides of the bridge that’s also worth exploring.

PROS: The views of the bridge merging with Nature from below are a work of art and is really great for photography.

If you’re only interested in walking across the bridge, you’ll have to do about 2 miles of a hike to get to the bridge and back as the closest parking is located about 1 mile away. I’d really call it a stroll and not a hike.

CONS: Unless you are going between November to April - Be prepared to wait in long lines to cross. Parking is a pain in the butt.

Check your email tomorrow for a parking guide so you don't get a massive ticket when visiting. In winter it's actually quite lovely. The bridge doesnt really close so you should try to get there after a fresh snowfall. If using a wheelchair and strollers, you should approach from the Sosberg parking side. Either way, do NOT park on the street as you’ll likely get fined. Parking fees are how they monetize the tour as walking across the bridge is completely free.

Until next time, Adventures Await!
