pros and cons + Walkers Haute Route in Switzerland and France.
My doodle and I are just back from an āInn-to-Innā 2 day hike on the Swiss-German border. Trail report coming! However, I will hint at that we ran into a blizzard, even mid-April at low elevation.
April does what April wants I guess š¤£. Itās the perfect time to examine āTrekking Insuranceāā¦or, what you really need to protect yourself (and your wallet).

Insider Trail Tips
Is Trekking Insurance even Real?
Great, more paperworkā¦
First things first: ātrekking insuranceā isnāt a real thing. Itās a marketing term.
When you want to protect your wallet, ie the $$$$ youāve spent on a trip the kind of coverage youāll want is ātravel insuranceā.
When you want to protect your body, ie helicopter rescues, emergency medical treatment/triage, transport to home country, youāll want to consider ārescue insuranceā.
They arenāt the same, but they often are sold by the same company.

The Walkers Haute Route France and Switzerland
This is such a boss of a hiking tour. Youāll walk from near the highest mountain in Europe, the Mt Blanc near Chamonix, France all the way to the Matterhorn, near Zermatt, Switzerland. While there are no technical bits, the days are quite long so youāll want to have some prior experience hiking in the Alps. Itās considered harder than the Tour du Mont Blanc. Youāll pass by 8 of the 10 highest mountains in the Alps, mountain villages and inspiring scenery. Youāll stay in a combo of mountain refuges and inns.
Youāll absolutely want to get rescue insurance for this one.

Dutch Hikers Rescued Near Garmisch (Mid April)
From the Garmisch page: āOn Tuesday, 16.04.2024, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain guard was asked for help by two Dutch people around 3 pm.
The two wanted to walk over the Reintal to the top of the train and were blocked at the height of the Knorrhƶtte due to the snow and low temperatures. It seemed to have turned out that neither sneakers nor sweatpants are suitable for climbing the top of the train in winter.
The two were rescued by two emergency forces and a helicopter from Polizei Oberbayern SuĢd in turbulent wind conditions.
We thank the Bavarian police for the good cooperation!ā
š Thankfully they were rescued, but is mid-April the time to hike the Reintal??? Hope they had insurance.
