Exact itinerary for Alta via 1 + BONUS

something really special is coming

Hey there hikers!

Letā€™s get realā€¦the Alta Via 1 trail in the Dolomites is one of the top 2 beginner hut to hut hiking trails in the world. Probably the Tour du Mont Blanc and AV1 are the MOST popular.

I love to go where others arenā€™tā€¦but this trail is unreal and magic.

IF you want to do itā€¦I would say this is your absolute last chance to book it yourself (iā€™ve got detailed instructions on how to do it in the post) or hire a self-guided planner. Thereā€™s some guided tour groups alsoā€¦

Prefer Video? The Lago di Braies Trailhead for the Alta Via 1

This video shows just how awesome the trailhead at Lago di Braies is.

Some people start at another trailhead, which is easierā€¦.but I donā€™t recommend skipping this for an easier day 1.

Important Announcement

Weā€™re going on break for the next 2 weeks for Christmas. I hope you and your loved ones enjoy the holiday season.

July 2024 šŸ‘‰ Crave the Planet is offering a Guided Dolomites Hut to Hut Hiking Tour

I have reserved 9 spaces in high elevation huts in the Dolomites for a 4 day trip the last week of July 2024.

Iā€™m offering the first chance to reserve to the email list and then opening it to the public. Please reply to this email if youā€™re interested for this amazing opportunity.

Note: This tour will not be on the Alta Via 1. I will be guiding the trip personally and we will be hiking in a more remote and less crowded area south of Cortina dā€™Ampezzo.

I find most Americanā€™s like to have a little more solitude on their hiking days so Iā€™m planning a special spot thatā€™s a lot quieter than the AV1 but with good food, good wine and comfy beds each night.

You can find all previous tips here.

If you have a friend who would find this newsletter useful, forward it to them.

Until next timeā€¦

Less Stress : Less Crowds: More Hiking šŸ‘ŽšŸ»

Hereā€™s an assortment of self guided treks that donā€™t require as much planning ahead as the popular Alta Via 1 and Tour du Mont Blanc.

āœˆļø This is my favorite kind of hiking tour! These are best accessed from Innsbruck, Austria or Munich, Germany.

Hiking Traveler Toolkit - The websites & apps I use:

  • Flight search: I check all prices and routes skyscanner first. Then I use Wayaway or Booking.com or direct with the airline.

  • Hotels: I book ALL my hotel nights with booking.com or airbnb. If I can book directly with the hotel over their website, phone or email iā€™ll skip the OTA to save the provider the fees.

  • A Necessity! Sleeping in huts and planes: I've been living the high life, or should I say, the high-altitude life, for over 7 years now. I take over 2 dozen flights a year and spend my free time sleeping in crowded Dolomites mountain huts. And let me tell you, getting some shut-eye in those cozy little cabins ain't easy. But fear not, my fellow adventurers, for I have discovered the ultimate sleep hack: the Manta Sleep mask. This bad boy blocks out every speck of light and leaves no trace of those pesky sleep lines on your face, even after a night spent snuggled up with strangers in a tiny hut. Plus, you can even hook it up to your phone and play some soothing tunes or meditation apps to help you drift off into dreamland. Check it here.

  • Tours and adventure activities: GetYourGuide is my go-to site for booking tours like paragliding, rafting and occasionally hikes. I also love Manawa because they have more off-the-beaten path destinations. For exclusive self-guided Hut to Hut Hiking Tours I love AlpenventuresUnguided because the owner has done each hike personally and knows how to shape a wonderful experience. And Skyhook Adventures is great for small guided group hikes.

  • Travel Insurance: Insurance depends on your trip so it's best to use a tool like Hey Mondo Travel Insurance to find what works best for you and my readers get 5% discount.
