Less Crowded Alternative to Alta Via 1 Hiking Dolomites
+ Hiking Challenge update, hiking in the rain tips, AMA fisherman's trail
Hello Lovely Hikers!
I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share an incredible adventure opportunity that I think you'll love—the Best of the Dolomites Trek. If you’re looking to explore Italy's stunning Dolomites, this trek offers an unforgettable experience (and is FAR less crowded than the AV1).
Today’s roundup:

Alternative to the Alta Via 1 - Less Crowded
When everyone else goes North - South, why not go East-West??? I know you like to go against the grain ;-)
Starting at the breathtaking Seceda Viewpoint, this route takes you through historic World War I sites, the charming town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, the beautiful Lago di Sorapis, and ends near the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. It follows sections of the Alta Via 1, 2, 3, 4, and 9 paths, providing a continuous and less technical journey without via ferratas.
Here’s why this trek stands out:
- More Accommodation Availability: Easier to book huts compared to the Alta Via 1.
- Resupply Options: Pass through 2 towns along the way.
- Comfortable Lodgings: Enjoy more comfortable accommodations, some with en-suite bathrooms.
- Optional Lifts: Five lifts along the route for optional breaks.
While there are some rugged sections and the route requires careful navigation, it's perfect for those who have completed the Alta Via 1 or are seeking an alternative challenge.
There are different itineraries to suit your pace:
- 9-Day Standard Itinerary: The classic option.
- 7-Day Itinerary: For fit and experienced hikers.
- 12-Day Itinerary: For a more relaxed pace.
If this sounds like the adventure you’ve been waiting for, I encourage you to check it out. Click here to learn more and book your trek today!

Hiking in the Rain Tips
As the German saying goes…there’s no bad weather, only bad clothing. However, I hardly see anyone on the trails in bad weather which is awesome because then I have them to myself ;-)
Don't let rainy days keep you indoors! Hiking in the rain can be a refreshing and beautiful experience. Here are some quick tips to make the most of it:
Wear the Right Gear: Waterproof jackets, pants, and boots are essential. Consider adding gaiters, rain skirts, and baseball caps to stay extra dry.
Stay Safe: Use trekking poles for balance and be cautious on slippery trails.
Pack Smart: Keep your essentials dry with waterproof bags and carry easy snacks. Treat your gear with Nikwax for added water resistance.
Enjoy the Scenery: Rainy hikes offer quieter trails, stunning waterfalls, and the invigorating scent of petrichor.

Personal Hiking Challenge Update
I have to admit, trying to level up my outdoor video skills to document the 101 Hikes challenge has been extremely time-consuming and hard. Not the hiking…the filming and editing, lol.
But, it’s coming along after some gear purchase mishaps, maybe too much use of transitions like a 2020 tiktoker and amusement with my own dogs.
Here’s my most recent “halloween hike” roundup of really cool spooky trails in Germany.
Sadly, I heard from a Komoot executive that they may be doing away with the overall mileage counter. I need to lobby them to keep this feature! No more apps, please…but for now it’s working to track progress by year and you can always count up the hikes you did.
So update on the hiking challenge goes:
745 km this year, (463 miles)
17,790 meters elevation this year. (58,366 ft)
45 hikes since June
How is your hiking going this year?
Can I ask a favor?
Can you help me grow my Youtube channel so that the algo starts spreading my hiking videos? Simply go to youtube on your phone or computer and type in the search bar, “crave the planet” and subscribe to my channel, comment or like videos. Thanks so much!
Okay, until next time!
