Travel Blog Archive ➡️ STEP BY STEP Booking Your Own Huts for THIS summer
The Alta Via 1 trail will forever hold a special place in my heart. But after spending 1/100th of the time planning and booking I think I'm a convert to the lesser known hut to hut trails in the Dolomites.
It was so much easier I decided to actually record my screen with looms and put them altogether in this blog post to share with you guys.
Watch the videos to learn how to do it yourself quite easily.
DO NOT judge my lack of grooming 😃 in the screencast.
Quick Training Tip ➡️ Downhills
Here's the question:
What can you do to reduce the misery of downhills on long treks like the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Do this exactly:
Make your leg muscles stronger in the gym: 2x/wk with "heavyish" strength training
Use Trekking Poles
Gradually adapt to the hills
Zigzag downhill to decrease the steepness
Absorb the forces instead of "plodding" like an elephant. Think: Walk like Natty Bumppo...quietly through the forest
The goal is not to avoid pain altogether, but to make it a better experience. Downhills just suck.
Hot Take ➡️ Cotton is Crap
This is not clickbait. Hikers cannot keep on with this cotton business on their feet. Try:
Merino Wool
Wool
Synthetic blend
Read my entire buying guide for great hiking socks 👎🏻
On the Way ➡️ Going to Montenegro for Outdoor Research
We're getting super pumped for next weekend to hit the late spring hiking season in Montenegro. We're buying a vacation flat there because it's insanely beautiful on the Bay of Kotor and has great food.
The Bay is actually a Fjord, so the hikes will be intense! Reply to this email if you're interested in a particular activity near Kotor, Montengro and I'll try to research it.
Currently we're planned to do the Ladder of Kotor Hike, take the boats out to the Blue Cave near Perast and eat...a lot of meat. Montenegro is famous for really good meat and a lot of it.
I digress...as always...
